PIEDMONTESE CONTINUALLY IMPRESS IN STEAK OF ORIGIN
Meat and Wool New Zealand each year run the "Steak of Origin" competition to find the best steak in New Zealand'.
The majority of cattle breeds eagerly contested the event - its very prestigious, and reflects on their breed, and the importance of their breed's ability to deliver the tastiest and most succulent steak.
Despite the quite small numbers of Piedmontese cattle in New Zealand - the society has always had finalists every year since the competition's inception. The numbers are quite disproportionate to the number of stock in New Zealand - and is a tribute to the breed, and its remarkable tenderness.
This year, 2011, Charlie Stephens came second in the "Best of European" section, and Colin Brown had two semi finalists in the Best of Crossbred section.
The highlight of the awards was in 2009 when Catherine Withers was Grand Champion and Colin Brown was Grand Champion Brand - a clean sweep of the awards.
If you want to grown beef that is tender, healthy - and obviously extremely tasty, then look no further than the Piedmontese breed. It will tenderise any cross!
